Say where a value comes from.
A field is typed in, picked from another object, counted from other objects, or numbered in order. Typed in covers text, numbers, yes or no, a choice from a list, formatted text, a list of name–value pairs and files.

A number that counts itself.
A counted field sums, averages or counts the objects a container holds, or the objects that point at this one — and it can filter them first, so it counts only the ones that are open. Change one of them and the total changes with it.

Totals nobody retypes before the review.
A card for a group shows the sum of its members and how many of them are open. Nobody added those numbers up: change a member's value and the group's card changes on every board that draws it.

Count what was already counted.
A count can read another count. A plan sums its stages, and each stage counts its tasks; move a task to Done and the stage, the plan and its progress bar change in one step.

Links to other objects, and numbers in order.
A reference field holds another object — an owner, an epic, an objective — and that object can tell who points at it. A counter hands out numbers in order with the type's prefix, and a number once given stays.
